Bobbi Martin For The Love of Him
A great song of dedication may be seen strongly here. Bobbi Martin wrote For the Love of Him in 1969 and at first it was a flop record. Her second album on United Artists was recorded, once again a country record with a picture of Bobbi holding a piece of grass and sporting red hair. She sang covers of country standards, "You're Cheating' Heart," "Crazy Arms," and "Here Comes My Baby Back Again."
Bobbi was feeling another loss, but a DJ out of Philly heard the song and wanted to have her on his program. It would be a sure way to promote the record. Bobbi was tired and did not want to promote the song. It had been out for months and had not done anything. But she had her friend Dennis and manager Miriam Love encouraging her to go out and do the show. "It could be another hit," Miriam told her on the telephone. "Just do it," Dennis told her and so she did.
For the Love of Him was her biggest hit to date. It shot to #13 on the billboard and was #1 on easy listening. Now Bobbi was told she was going to record a whole new album of the newly formulated "adult contemporary" material.
Her producer chose songs for her like "Happy Heart," "Something," "Come Saturday Morning," and "Help Yourself." Tom Jones seemed to be an artist she liked very much and did his songs well. The album also included "Yesterday's Crowding My World," a song that should've been released as a single, (a sure top 40 hit,) as well as her own composition of "Goin' South," and "Give a Woman Love." "Give a Woman Love," was a minor hit for her.
But some interesting news is For the Love of Him was a bigger hit in Canada and went all the way to #9. Canadian audiences seemed to enjoy her a lot. For The Love of Him should've made her a star of the 70's but it was basically the downhill road of her career. I refer to Bobbi as the most underrated singer in America. But if you like her, you know she's great!
