Sarah Vaughan & Shy

The news has got out that a dead ringer for the jazz singer Sarah Vaughan is indeed most definitely Shyvi. So since we know who Shyvi is, the late personality of YouTube, who is Sarah Vaughan?

Well Sarah Vaughan is considered one of the greatest jazz singers known as “The Divine One.” Two Grammy awards, one for Jazz vocal performance female in 1983 for Gershwin Live! and the lifetime achievement award. Also the NEA Jazz Masters.

Sarah was born in Newark, New Jersey. She sang regular at Mount Zion babtist church and began taking piano lessons at age 7 for the next 8 years. She even picked up the organ and won the Apollo Theatre talent show.

At 19, discovered by Billy Eckstine, Sarah began her music career. Earl Hines hired her to his band in 1943 as vocalist and second on the piano. and by the next year she was in Billy Eckstine’s band. Dizzy Gillespie sang her praises, calling her a new development in Jazz. Sarah began recording her own songs.

Some of her first hits in the late 40’s were “tenderly, and “black coffee”. With a new look, in the fifties she recorded classics like “make yourself comfortable, and “whatever Lola wants.” Unlike pop songs, Sarah’s Jazz songs stood out as standards and carried through time.

Reluctant to sing rock n’ roll, “broken Hearted Melody “ was a smash for her and her last top 40 record. By then Sarah Vaughan was a star of the highest order, performing in many clubs and venues. She was a legend.

“Misty” became her standard song. She sang in a cool lush voice that deepend in her age. She commanded an orchestra. An inherent sense of timing and phrasing made her a jazz star.

Does this apply to Shyvi as well, who commands her YouTube audience with quiet sounds and roar out laughter. Does she have aspirations to sing Jazz? Shyvi has disclosed to colonist Joey that “I guess I will have to sing Jazz? Shyvi enjoys Jazz music very much, and finds it to be a classy, city style. “I guess I better take up jazz lessons. I wonder if somehow I was an ancestor?

Time will only tell as Shyvi continues deliveries and begins her jazz lessons. Joey says good luck. She looks a lot like Sarah Vaughan..
